What Is Hard Water?

Hard water is water that carries a heavy concentration of dissolved mineral ions—primarily calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺). Across rural Southern Ontario, hard water is by far the single most common water complaint among private well owners.

The underlying cause is Ontario's geology. Much of Southern Ontario—from the Niagara Escarpment to Prince Edward County—rests upon vast beds of ancient Silurian and Ordovician limestone and dolomite rock. As rainwater naturally percolates through soil, it absorbs carbon dioxide, creating weak carbonic acid that dissolves calcium carbonate from the bedrock into your aquifer.

How Hard Is Well Water in Niagara? Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon (GPG) or milligrams per liter (mg/L). Water above 10.5 GPG is classified as "very hard." In towns like Wainfleet, West Lincoln, and Pelham, untreated well water frequently tests between 15 to over 35 GPG.

Common Signs of Hard Well Water in Your Home

You usually don't need a lab test to tell if your water is hard. The physical evidence appears throughout the house:

The Hidden Financial Toll on Home Appliances

While calcium and magnesium are safe to ingest, hard water causes immense financial damage behind your drywall and inside appliances:

The Solution: Modern Ion-Exchange Softening

The standard, proven method for resolving hard well water is an ion-exchange water softener.

Inside the softener tank, tiny polystyrene resin beads carry a negative electrical charge, holding sodium or potassium ions. As hard well water passes through the beads, the stronger electrical charge of calcium and magnesium attracts them to the resin, displacing the sodium into the water stream in negligible amounts. Periodically, the system regenerates automatically using brine salt to flush the trapped minerals down the drain.
