Norfolk County's Unique Sand Plain Geology

Known as Ontario's Garden County, Norfolk County features one of the most distinctive hydrogeological settings in the province: the Norfolk Sand Plain. This massive glacial sand and gravel deposit stores enormous quantities of groundwater, supporting extensive agricultural operations and thousands of private wells.

Because the geology shifts between shallow unconfined sand aquifers and underlying Dundee limestone bedrock, well water issues vary widely. Shallow sand-point or dug wells often draw fine silt and sediment, and require vigilance regarding agricultural nitrates. Meanwhile, deeper drilled wells avoid surface contaminants but regularly encounter dissolved iron, high calcium hardness, and hydrogen sulfide gas (sulfur smell) along the Lake Erie shoreline.
